Made to paint

Control complexity before you print

A photo contains thousands of tiny color changes that are frustrating to paint one by one. This generator groups similar colors, traces connected regions and merges the smallest fragments according to the detail level you choose.

Start with Standard. Move to Easy for larger shapes, simple landscapes and first projects. Use Detailed only when the source has important small features and you are comfortable painting smaller cells.

Three useful files

Keep the outline, preview and key together

The numbered SVG is the best master file because it remains sharp when resized for printing. The PNG is convenient for ordinary image software. The separate color-key image maps every printed number to its generated RGB swatch.

Generated colors are screen colors, not guaranteed matches to a paint brand. Compare the key under neutral light and mix or select your real acrylic paints before starting the canvas.

Four steps

How to make a paint by numbers pattern from a photo

  1. Choose a clear photo.Use a focused subject, visible edges and balanced light.
  2. Set colors and detail.Begin with 16 colors and Standard regions.
  3. Generate and inspect.Check faces and other important small shapes before exporting.
  4. Download the set.Save the numbered outline, color preview and matching key.

Better source, better pattern

Photos that work well for paint by numbers

Choose one obvious subject

Pets, portraits, flowers, buildings and landscapes with a clear focal point usually convert better than crowded scenes.

Avoid noisy backgrounds

Leaves, fur, text and clutter can create many small regions. Crop tighter or choose Easy detail when the background competes with the subject.

Watch pale areas

Dark printed outlines and numbers may show through light paint. Use the color preview as a guide and apply additional thin coats when needed.

FAQ

Paint by Numbers Generator FAQ

How do I make paint by numbers from a photo?

Choose a photo, select the paint count and region detail, generate the pattern, then download the numbered SVG or PNG and the matching color key.

How many colors should I use?

Start with 16 or 24. Twelve colors make a simpler project; 32 keep more transitions but introduce more mixing and smaller regions.

Why are some regions too small?

Photography contains fine texture. Easy and Standard deliberately merge more tiny facets. A simpler source image or a tighter crop also helps.

Can I print the generated pattern?

Yes. Use Print / Save PDF for a clean print layout, download SVG as the scalable master for a large print, or use PNG with ordinary image software. Always keep the color key with the outline.

Does the color key match store-bought paint?

It shows generated RGB colors, not calibrated brand formulas. Use it as a visual mixing and shopping reference, then compare real paints under neutral light.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Processing happens locally in your browser. Very complex images may take longer because the work uses your device.
